James Rasley Hotton was born circa May 1856 at St Dennis, Cornwall.2,3,4 He was baptised on 5 September 1858 at St Dennis, Cornwall.1,5

James Rasley Hotton was probably also known as Rashleigh Hotton. The parish records do not show a birth, baptism or death for 'James' or 'James Rasley'. But, there is a 'James Rasley' who was baptised and a 'Rashleigh' who was buried so, it looks as if he was known as Rashleigh when he was older.6

James Rasley Hotton died circa May 1866 at St Austell.7

Rashleigh Hotton was buried on 15 April 1866 in Charlestown, Cornwall.8

William Hotton, son of John Houghton and Mary Dungey, was born before 12 July 1772 at Mawgan-in-Pydar, Cornwall,1,2,4,3 and was baptised there on 12 July 1772.3 William Hotton married Catharine Bawden on 10 February 1806 at St Austell, Cornwall. The entry in the church register described them as bachelor and spinster of this parish and recorded that they were married after Banns by I Rogers, Curate. Both made their marks which were witnessed by John Roberts and John Hocking.5,6

The following appeared in thein West Briton newspaperon 19 October 1838:

William Houghton, on bail, a respectable looking man, of Charlestown, was charged with having stolen 10 pieces of timber on the 10th of July last.

The indictment was laid in three counts, the first making the timber the property of the Queen, the second laid it as the property of Phillip Hoare, and the third as the property of some person unknown. It appeared from the evidence, which was of great length, that the prisoner and his brother had salved the piece of timber, and brought it on shore at Charlestown Quay. Mr Colenso, the agent of the Duchy, read an account of it in the West Briton, and immediately went down to the quay and branded it with the broad arrow of her Majesty, claiming it for the Queen as the lady of the manor of Tewington, and giving instructions to Mr Hoare to see that it was not taken away for a year and a day, when if it was not claimed by the owner it would be sold, and half the proceeds go to her Majesty, the other half to the salvors. Mr Houghton, however, determined that he would not be deprived of his salvage, and he accordingly sold it to Mr Hancock, of Canna Cara for 5s., for the doing of which he was now prosecuted for felony. Mr. Coode, jun appeared for the prosecution; Mr John and Mr. B. Lyne, for the defence, and Mr John asked the usual questions about the Queen's rights, as the lady of the manor of Tewington, out at sea; but these could not be defined. The learned gentleman strongly contended that the mere circumstances of its being landed on the manor gave Mr Colenso no power to pounce on it, and brand it with his broad arrow; and in this the jury seemed to concur for they found the prisoner not guilty.

The trial occupied three hours, but as we reported a very similar case fully at the last sessions, it is unnecessary, even if we could spare the room, to go over the same ground again. The Court rose about seven o'clock.

Another account of the same case appeared in the book Charlestown by Richard and Bridget Larn:

A much published case of wrecking in the district concerning a Charlestown man, was heard before the magistrates of Bodmin Quarter Sessions at Michaelmas 1838. William Houghton, described as as 'a respectable looking man', was charged with having stolen ten pieces of wreck timber on 10 July. The prisoner and his brother had salvaged the timber, found floating out in the bay, landing it from their boat at Charlestown Quay. Mr Colenso, the Agent for the Duchy of Cornwall, on reading of it in the West Briton newspaper, immediately went to the quay and branded it with a broad-arrow mark, claiming it for the Queen, as Lady of the Manor of Tewington. He then instructed Mr Hoare, the agent for the village, that it was not to be taken away for a year and a day. Houghton, determined not to be deprived of his salvage, then sold the timber to a Mr Hancock, of Canna Carra, for 5s, which was the offence for which he was standing trial. The jury decided that the landing of it on the manor did not give Colenso the power to claim and brand it, consequently Houghton was found not guilty and discharged.7,8,9

On 19 October 1838he was brought before the Court of Quarter Sessions and found not guilty by the jury.7

William Hotton died circa November 1857 at St Austell10 was buried on 12 November 1857 in Charlestown, Cornwall, aged 87 years.11

William Hotton was a Carpenter at first1,12 but became a Dock Worker at Charlestown, Cornwall, in later life.4

John Houghton, son of William Hotton and Catharine Bawden, was born circa 1807 in Charlestown, St Austell, Cornwall,6,1,2,3,7,8 and was baptised on 1 February 1807 at St Austell, Cornwall.4 John Houghton married Ann Barnicott on 30 October 1832 at St Austell, Cornwall, They were both 'of this parish'; he was a bachelor and she was a spinster and they were married after Banns. They both made their mark and the witnesses were possibly William Hotton and Jacob Bennett.6,9,10

It is clear from the internet that a hobbler was connected with moving boats in and/or out of docks but this could be in one of two capacities it would seem. A hobbler may have been an unlicensed pilot; someone who tows vessels using a rope or a dock labourer. Since he was later recorded as a pilot it seems likely that he was an unlicensed pilot in 1861, However, if he wasn't a pilot he probably helped move vessels from one side of Charlestown's harbour, where they used to unload, to the other for loading up.11,12

John Houghton died circa February 1879 at St Austell13 and was buried on 1 March 1879 at Charlestown, Cornwall, aged 74 years.14

John Houghton was a Pilot in 1841.6

John Houghton was a Dock Labourer and Hobbler. The job of a Hobbler was to bring the vessels into the port using ropes and capstans and to get them out again. They were under the control of a Master Hobbler. They also used two buoys moored out to sea in 7 April 1861.2,15,7,12,16

John Houghton was a Dock Labourer in 7 April 1871.8

William Henry Houghton, son of John Haughton and Elizabeth Ann Houghton, was born in November 1849 at Gwennap, Cornwall,6,1,8,4,9,10,11,12,5,13,14

William married Mary Jane Whetting circa September 1876 at St Austell.4,15

William Henry Houghton died circa February 1913 at Bodmin aged 6516 and was buried on 8 March 1913 the Cemetery at Charlestown. His abode was given as Bodmin.17

William Henry Houghton was a Ship's Carpenter Apprentice 1861. Presumably, that's the reason he was living with his uncle in the port of Charlestown. By 1871 his apprenticeship had clearly ended as he is recorded in that year's census as a shipwright. After a further ten years he is seen as a ship's carpenter after which he became a dock labourer and, later, a porter and hobbler.18,9,19,11,12,5

William Henry Houghton was a Shipwright in 1871.9
