Laurence Edward Dawson lived at 19 Gamble Drive, Bramley, Leeds.2 He was born on 1 April 1920 at 21 Grotto Square, Mason Street, Kingston-upon-Hull.1,2 Laurence's father died when he was only three years old. He went to live with his grandparents (Hodgson) who brought him up at 8 Nelson Villas, Egton Street, Hull. He passed his exams to attend Grammar School but unfortunately he could not go as his grandparents could not afford to send him.1,2

When he left school he got a job at the end at the end of Egton Street; it was a Dutch firm that made electric light bulbs and he worked there2 until he joined the East Yorkshire Regiment and volunteered for the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME). He was posted to Sunderland and then to North Africa, spending time in Egypt, Ismalia, Ameria and Tobruk. He sent part of his soldier's pay back home to his Grandma for safe keeping but, on her death, the next of kin was Ethel Alberta Hodson and Laurence lost all his savings.2

He started writing to Caroline during the war. She had written a letter to her brother Thomas Henry (Harry) Dawson. By mistake the letter was given to Laurie instead. Laurie asked Harry if Caroline would mind him writing to her. After the war Caroline went to meet Laurie and turned up in Egton Street, Hull.2

When he came out of the Army both his grandparents were dead so he lived at 43 Egton Street, Hull, for a while. He worked as a mate on the barges in Hull with James Hodgson until he moved to Leeds.2

Laurence Edward Dawson married Caroline Dawson, daughter of Thomas Harry Dawson and Minnie Harrison, at Christ Church, Upper Armley, Leeds, West Yorkshire.1 At the time of his marriage in 1947 his occupation was Coal Deliverer. He worked with Harry Dawson2 and lived at 20 Cedar Terrace, Armley, Leeds.2 In 1952 his occupation was Engineer Crane Driver2 and he now lived at 3 Abbot Street, Armley, Leeds.2 He worked for Smith's Engineering Company in Rodley until the 1960s then went to work for the Leeds and Bradford Boiler Company for the remainedr of his life.2

He died on 2 December 1977 at age 57 from cardio respiratory failure, hypertension, coronary atheroma and nephrosclerosis.1,2
