Ralph Henry Pickard, son of John Edwin Pickard and Emma Maria Wheeler, was born on 3 November 1891 at Battersea, Wandsworth.1,3,4,5,6,7,8

On 24 February 1913 he was made a member of the Steam Engine Makers Society and became a member of Eastleigh No. 144 Branch.9

Ralph Henry Pickard married Eleanor Grace Blanks, daughter of John T Blanks and Sarah Ann Parker, on 18 March 1916 at the Parish of Christ Church, Luton, Bedfordshire.1,3,2,5 Ralph Henry Pickard was an Engine Fitter5 and lived at 96 Highbury Road at the time.5 About 1921 he moved to 34 Dunsdale Place, Letchworth, Hertfordshire,4 and later he moved to Crofton, 15 Cashio Lane, Letchworth. The house was renumbered about 1980 when some new houses were built close to Croft Lane.4,10,11

During WWII he was in the National Fire Service.4 He was described on his National Identity Pass dated 7 September 1943 as 5 feet 6 1/2 inches tall with blue eyes and grey hair.4

Ralph Henry Pickard died on 1 October 1986 at age 94 at 41 Letchworth Road, Baldock, Hertfordshire.1,3 A number of items of memorabilia have survived him. There is a bible inscribed: Ralph Pickard 122 Gladstone Road (crossed out) a present from his mother Christmas 1900. It contains a piece of paper with the writing: Aunt Mary Anne address Mrs Trenhella, 70 Crimsworth Road, Wandsworth Road, Battersea.12

There is also a dictionary inscribed Arthur Bryon January 19 1871. It is stamped R H Pickard. Various pencil entries are rubbed out. It would appear to be a library book which has been passed on.13 There is also a Guide to Silver marks dated 17 February 1962 of which he is the most likely owner.14

In 1971, Ralph Henry Pickard appeared in a photograph taken at the Graduation and Passing Out Parade of Anthony George Patrick Mooney from RAF OCTU, RAF Henlow. Ernest Frederick Shaw, Ruth Grace Pickard, David Arthur Drury, Eleanor Grace Blanks and Joan Katharine Shaw also appeared in the photograph.15 He also appeared in a photograph with a group of men sitting down outside a grand building.16

Ralph Henry Pickard was a Planning Engineer.3,11
