He grew up in difficult circumstances. His daughter Sheila recalled:

My father told me of an upbringing where they put cardboard in their shoes because they couldn't afford for them to be mended.5

He served in the RAF as an Electrician in India. He sent the greater part of his RAF wages home to his mother to help with his younger brothers and sisters.6,7

William Arnold Hodgson married Enid Green, daughter of Alan Green and Eva Allan, on 18 October 1947 at the Methodist Church. Preston Road in the County Borough of Kingston-upon-Hull. He was a 25 year old bachelor and she was a spinster aged 20. He developed dementia, as did three of his sisters. His daughter Wendy moved him to Huddersfield for the last year or so of his life.15

Sheila Adams recalled:

Something which made my normally strong father cry on the occassions she was mentioned, it seems that Eleanor, his mother, and her sister Sadie were brought up by a woman other than their mother, and Eleanor's hands were deformed from severe repeated beatings.16
