Eleanor Duncan was born on 30 September 1890 at 10 Poplar Terrace, Woodhouse Street, Drypool.1,2,3,4 Eleanor Duncan also went by the name of Lena.2

Eleanor applied for a certified copy of her birth certificate for the purposes of the Factories and Work Act 1891. This probably meant she was seeking work.5

Eleanor Duncan married Pawson Hodgson, son of Robert Hodgson and Susannah Pawson, on 27 March 1909 at one 'o'clock at Register Office, 12 Harley Street, Beverley Road, Sculcoates, County of Yorkshire East Riding and Kingston-upon-Hull. The marriage was by certificate and was conducted by John Clapham the registrar. Pawson was described as a Bachelor aged 24 and Eleanor as a spinster aged 19. They both signed their names in the presence of two witnesess, Thomas Hodgson, his brother, and Rose Helen Hodgson his brother's wife. Eleanor was said to be rich, although her descendants didn't agree.6,1,7,3,4,8,9 They both gave 3A Hotham Grove, Hotham Street, Hull, as their address.1,8

Eleanor received a postcard from her husband Pawson dated 16 November 1917 thanking her for the glasses she had sent him.5

Eleanor died on 27 January 1960 at age 69 at Western General Hospital, Hull, a day or so before her husband who was in hospital. She collapsed when she was visiting him in hospital and had a stroke. It was said that she died of a broken heart.10,11,3 She lived at c/o 76 Bexhill Avenue, Hull, at the time.11

Sheila Adams recalled:

Something which made my normally strong father cry on the occassions she was mentioned, it seems that Eleanor, his mother, and her sister Sadie were brought up by a woman other than their mother, and Eleanor's hands were deformed from severe repeated beatings.12

On 1974 Eleanor was photographed with Elsie Hodgson, Cyril Robert Hodgson and Queenie Margaret Hodgson about 1910-20.5

On VE Day on 8 May 1945 Eleanor was photographed with Pawson Hodgson. Marie Hodgson and Winnie Hodgson also appeared in the photo. Pawson is next to the rightmost post. Marie, Eleanor, and Winnie are on the right standing with the dog.5

There is charming photo of Eleanor with a photo of Pawson in his Army uniform inserted behind her.5

There is also a photo of Eleanor and Pawson walking down a street with Sadie Duncan close behind them.5

Eleanor Hodgson and her daughter Winifred were photographed near the at Harbour Offices, Hull.5

Another photograph of Eleanor and Pawson.5

Eleanor Hodgson was photographed with Queenie Margaret Hodgson. They appear to have been shopping.5
