In 1841 he was a Draper. By 1857 he was a Miller and then became a Policeman in Liskeard for about two years but was asked to resign for inefficiency.^2,1

John and his father appeared as witnesses in the trial of Gilbert White at the Cornwall Lent Asszes on 27 March 1845.⁵
