Evelyn Mary Houghton, daughter of William Henry Houghton and Mary Jane Whetting, was born circa 1890 in Charlestown, Cornwall.1,2

Evelyn Mary Houghton married John Taylor circa May 1912 and stayed in the village3,4 and lived at 30 Quay Road, Charlestown.3

She appeared in a photograph as a young girl.5

There is an old photo which may have been taken at Evelyn and John's wedding. It shows the bride and groom sitting with a man standing to their left and a woman standing to the right. It is thought that the standing woman may be Clarice Marion Houghton.6

There is another photo of Evelyn Mary with four of her children but only Clarice May has been identified. The other are likely to be Doreen, Margaret and William.6

Evelyn was photographed with Doreen Taylor and Leonie Taylor. Also in the photo was baby Damon.5

John C Moore also went by the name of Johnnie Moore.3 He, son of Nicholas Bunt Moore and Mary Ann Hotton, was born circa November 1855 in St Austell, Cornwall,1,4 and was baptised on 11 November 1855 at Charlestown, Cornwall.2

Circa 25 July 1887, a Mr John C Moore, described as a harbour master, appeared for the defence in a case involving damage to a ship in Charlestown harbour. The Captain of the vessel was claiming compensation for the damage caused to his boat when the harbour was emptied of water. The ruling went in favour of the defendants.5

A John C Moore was listed as a Dock Master in Kelly's Directory of Cornwall 1889 and in Kelly's Directory of Devon and Cornwall 1893.6,7

Was in trouble with the law in early 1890. The following appeared in the Larn's book on Charlestown:

To H. Evans Gordon Esq. John Moore, our Dockmaster - a very good man - has been summonsed with the proprietors by the man Holman, the man who met with an accident to his hand some little time ago through, as Bulteel thought, his own carelessness. You agreed to allow Holman 10s a week for some weeks, in spite of which he summonsed us and Moore. The County Court Judge at once dismissed with costs the case brought against the proprietors, but after taking a day to consider the evidence, fined John Moore £15 and costs (several pounds no doubt) for carelessness. Bulteel thinks the judge wrong and if he describes the case accurately I certainly agree with him. Moore is really an excellent person and in my opinion we ought not to allow him to suffer but to pay the £15 costs ourselves. Do you agree on the part ot the Sartoris Trustees? Bulteel tells me he considers Moore's present wages of 30s a week inadequate, and he is shortly going to ask us to pay him some percentage in proportion to the trade.8

Johhnie was Charlestown's last dockmaste and retired in 1910 at the grand old age of 82. During his life he saved seven people from drowning, two at the same time on a regatta Saturday. He was awarded the bronze medal from the Humane Society of England for his courage.

This was probably the bronze medal of the Royal Humane Society which is awarded to people who have put their own lives at great risk to save or attempt to save someone else.9,10

A death was registered for a John C Moore circa February 1927 at Truro This is the only death listed by FBMD but the age (71) conflicts with the age (82) given by the Larns in their Charlestown book.11,3

A photo of him was included in Charleston - The History of a Cornish Seaport published in 1994 giving his age as 82.3

John was a Butcher's Apprentice at the time of the 1871 Census. By 1881, he had become a Dock Porter. Later, he became a Dock Master. The job of the Dock Master was extremely challenging. He had sole responsibility for the movement of ships within the dock once the gates were closed, as well as the loading and unloading of cargo. Up to fifteen vessels could be accomdated in port at any one time.
