George Forbes Osbourn, son of Thomas Osborne and Elizabeth Craggs, was born on 11 June 1810 in Knottingley4 and was baptised there at St Botolph's on 1 July 1810.7,3,6,4,5,8 George Forbes Osbourn married Bessey Baldwin, daughter of William Baldwin, on 9 September 1838 at St Gile's, Pontefract, Yorkshire, The marriage was solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of Pontefract in the County of York according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church by Banns. Both the bride and groom were of full age and each made their mark. The witnesses were Catharine Wardell and Joseph Waterton.2,9,4 His was 5 feet and 5 inches tall wtih brown hair, blue eyes, no marks and a ruddy complexion.4

He first went to sea in 1825 as a Boy and later served as a Seaman or Mate (from 12 December 1844) on the Madam, Ann & Mary, and Benjamin & Sarah. In 1851 he was Mate on the vessel Blessing. About 2 years later2,7,9,10,4,11 , on 11 August 1852, he became a Master Mariner4 and served on a single masted sloop called the Two Brothers for about 10 months.

Ron Gosney author of The Sailing Ships and Mariners of Knottingly kindly provided the following informations about these vessels: The Madam was a single masted sloop built in Knottingley in 1849 and was jointly owned by Joseph Kitson, John Fisher and James Aaron - Aaron was master when G F Osborne was mate; the Ann & Mary was a single masted sloop built in Selby in 1826 and was owned by Wm Gandy & Matthew Woodall of Knottingley - George Horn was master and George F Hosborn was mate; the Benjamin & Sarah was a sloop built in Wakefield in 1840 and was owned by Benjamin & John Watson of Knottingley - Charles Harden of Kent was master when George was mate; the Blessing was a sloop built in Wakefield in 1837 and was owned by the Marshall family of Knottingley - Mark Marshall was master when George was mate and the Two Brothers was a sloop built in Knottingley in 1827 and was owned by Michael Taylor of Knottingley. This vessel was sold in 1853 and registration transferred to Sunderland. on 11 August 1852.4

George Forbes Osbourn and Elizabeth Osbourn lived at Knottingley on 2 January 1845.2

Living at no. 27 was a family called Land and at no. 25 was another family called Day. There may be there was some connection as relatives often lived close to each other in those days and Susannah Pawson's mother was called Ann Land before she married Robert Hodgson.12

George Forbes Osbourn died on 9 December 1874 at age 64. The death was registered at Pontefract.13,4,14 He was buried in the Wesleyan burial ground, Knottingley, described as a Fishman.4
