McCabe

McCabes are descended from Scottish gallowglass, who in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries fought for the O'Reillys and O'Rourkes of Breffny. They were also in the service of MacMahon and became a prominent family around Monaghan town. In common with many other families, they lost their lands after the Williamite wars at the end of the seventeenth century, although remaining a widespread name of the county.

James Mooney, son of John Mooney and Elizabeth McCabe, was born on 5 January 1878 probably at Armagh, County Monaghan.1,3,4,5

James Mooney began police service on 1 October 1896 from Queen's County joining the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) at the age of 19 years and 8 months. His record of service gives his number as 57961, his height as 5 feet 9 inches, his religion as Catholic and that he was recommended by District Inspector O'Hara who also recommended his brothers.4,6 He he was transferred to Co Down on 10 December 1897 at the end of his training and received a class two award twentyone months later on 17 June 1899.4 James ended his police service on 4 July 1899 resigning from the RIC for private reasons probably because of the injuries he sustained in 'big fights' in Dublin. He came home as an invalid and died soon afterwards.4,6

His death took place on 19 April 1900 at New York House, Grennan, Attanagh, Queen's County, when he was probably 22 years old. A memory card gives his age as 23 but his headstone says 22.7,8,3,9,10,11 He was buried at Ballyouskill, Co Kilkenny.12,7,9,10

There is a passage in Dermot Dorgan's book about the history of Ballyouskill that refers to a local man called Hugh Toole who was also in the RIC and remembers the Mooneys:

He often spoke of the men from his native locality who served with him, men like the Mooneys of Lower Grennan, of whom all four sons joined the force in which their father and an uncle had served before them. He was fortunate in his 'Depot days' that Paddy Mooney was a Head Constable there at the time, and to Hugh's benefit the spirit of neighbourliness transcended the strict Victorian regimentation which separated the ranks.

A similar situation applied when he served with Andrew Mooney later during the stirring days in Clare. Andrew, who received all his education in Ballouskill N.S. where his Aunt was Principal, rose to the full commissioned rank of Divisional (sic) Inspector. This he achieved by educational success, winning in the process the coveted police award of the Queen's Gold Watch.13
