Doris Hodgson, daughter of George Hodgson and Miriam Osbourne, was born on 12 July 1900 in Hedon, Hull,1,5 and was baptised on 8 August 1900 there as a Primitive Methodist.5,4 She remained a strict Primitive Methodist throughout her life.6

The family were always on the move up and down the canals and they would often travel to Knottingley with a cargo of coal.5,7 Thelma James said of her mother:

She had a poor education because of moving around on the barge with her parents. She was able to read and write and had an incredible memory. She was employed in service in a large house, flour factory. Doris later worked as a nanny and part-time barmaid for Mr & Mrs G Watson proprietors of a pub probably in Goole.1

Thelma also said her mother was the eldest child and looked after her sisters Miriam and Bessie when their mother died8 and that she was secretive about her age.5

Doris Hodgson married Joseph Hodgson, son of George Hodgson and Hannah Wilbe, on 15 April 1933 at Parish Church, Parish of Drypool, Kingston-upon-Hull, in the Established Church after Banns. Joseph was a bachelor aged 30 and she was a spinster aged 32. The witnesses were George Hodgson and Mary E Hodgson.1,9 Doris lived at 6 Myrtle Avenue, Williamson Street, at the time.9

On 4 September 1935 Doris Hodgson was photographed with Paddy Mooney and Miriam Hodgson on their wedding day. Joseph Hodgson, Hannah Hodgson, Arthur L Hodgson, Alice Mabel Hodgson, Grace Bowman, Stanley Hodgson, Mona Binnington, Geoff Hodgson, Miriam Hodgson, Rita Hodgson, Norman Osborne Hodgson, Colin Stanley Hodgson and Mr (?) Petman also appeared in the photo. There are other people in the photo as well.10,11,7,12,13

Later in 1937 Doris and Joseph lived at 100 Alexander St, Goole.1

About July 1938 Doris Hodgson was photographed with Miriam Mooney and Maureen Mooney. The photo was taken outside Grace's, house. Thelma Hodgson, Grace Hodgson, Valerie Hodgson, Miriam Hodgson and Rita Hodgson also appeared in the photo.14,15 Doris and Joseph lived in Liverpool about 1941 where he was employed on shipyard war work.8,1 They lived at 23 Charnwood Road16 and 1A Oxford Road, Mosscroft in Huyton with Roby, Liverpool L36 1XE.17 Later they returned to Goole to live at 100 Edinburgh Street.18

Doris Hodgson and her daughter probably attended Ellen Hodgson's funeral in 1949.19

In 1983 or 1984 Miriam Mooney sent a Christmas card to Doris and Joe. It said:

Hope you are keeping well. Tom and myself are OK. I went over the New Bridge in the summer; went to see Bessie and Bill. Bessie is just the same as ever, never goes out and seems to live in her dressing gown, also went to see Arthur and Grace. Met most of their family. Norman's wife died.

We had a lovely time 'swigging' Arthur's home made wine. Maureen took me over for my birthday. Best birthday I have ever had. Old Goole is just the same as ever.

Love from Tom & Miri20,21

Doris Hodgson died on 23 March 1986 at age 85.1,22

About 1914 Doris Hodgson was photographed with Arthur L Hodgson outside 6 Sunnybank which has a bay window. Arthur Loft, Stanley Hodgson, Miriam Osbourne and Edward Shaw Loft also appeared in the photo.23,24

Doris was also photographed on her. She is dressed in a skirt and blouse and is sitting in what appears to be a photographers studio.25,19
On 15 April 1933 Doris and Joseph were photographed on their wedding day with George Hodgson, Edna Loft, Arthur Loft, Bessie Hodgson and Mary Hodgson.26

Yorks.7,8,6,9 Ellen Eastwood married Edward Shaw Loft, son of Robert Markham Loft and Mary Elizabeth Shaw, at Selby Abbey, Selby, W. Yorks, on Saturday 9 May 1896 by Banns. The marriage certificate states that Ellen was 19 years old whereas she was only sixteen years and eight months old, her birth certificate giving her birth as 5th August 1879.4,10,11,12,9 Ellen Eastwood was a Methodist.13

She was a hard worker and her children were always fed and well-dressed.14

She looked after George Hodgson's children when their mother died in 1918.. She sent them all to a dressmaker to have clothes made and used to send them to Sunday School three times each Sunday.15 (an unknown value) on 2 April 1919 at 6 Myrtle Avenue, Williamson Street, Hull, E. Yorks., Spanish Flu pandemic.4,16,17,18,9,19

George was described as a widower aged 46 and Ellen as a widow aged 42. Ellen's first husband, Edward, and George had been good friends and he had always told Ellen that if anything should happen to him she should marry George as he was a good man and would always look after her.1,20,2,16,5,9

Ellen was not able to read and write and her grandaughter, Sheila, used to read to her.21 Ellen had a treadle sewing machine and Sheila used to turn the handle for her sometimes.21

Ellen Eastwood fell ill with with cancer. Sheila Morton's mother used to look after her and quite often Sheila slept-over at her grandmother's house during the week. George came home at weekends and looked after Ellen himself. It is possible that the cancer was triggered when Ellen accidentally pulled a wardrobe over and it fell on top of her.22

Ellen Eastwood lived at 442 Southcoates Lane, Hull, although2 and she died on 30 January 1949 at 7 Orpington Villas, Rensburg Street, Hull, aged 69 from carcinomatosis. This was her daughter, Edna's, home where Ellen lived in her final years.2,7,4,9,19 She was buried in 1949 at Eastern Cemetery, Preston Road, Hull, The inscription is: In Loving Memory of ELLEN the beloved wife of George Hodgson passed away Jan. 30th. 1949 aged 69 years. Bessie Hodgson, daughter of George Hodgson and Miriam Osbourne, was born on 19 April 1918 at 6 Sunnybank, Preston RD, Yorkshire.4,5,3 She had ginger coloured hair just like her sister Miriam in 19196 who used to look after her. The two of them lived in the loft. Bessie used to wet the bed and Miriam used to dry the sheets for her out of the bedroom window on the quiet.. They used to spend the money they were given for the Sunday School collection and not go but they were careful to arrive home at the proper time. Eventually their step-mother found out and gave them hell.7

Bessie was a Corporal in the WAAF during WWII. Her service number was 886167. She was in charge of the batwomen looking after the officers and had to prepare the work rotas and check the standard of work. Thelma James said in 1994: I recall seeing Aunt Bessie in uniform. She may have been on leave staying with her sister Miriam or Doris. She used to come home quite often and on at least one occasion brought someone home with her. She had to leave the WAAF when she became pregnant1,8,9,10,11,12,13,14 was sent as a maid to a vicarage until it was sorted out where she would go to have her baby. She wore a black and white uniform in the mornings and a coffee coloured one in the afternoons.14 Bessie was living at 100 Edinburgh Street, Goole, on 4 April 1942 when her baby was born.12

Bessie married Samuel Logan circa August 1942. He had no previous children. They only had one child, Gillian, together.4,15,13 Bessie Hodgson next married W Smallwood circa 1958 when Bessie was about 40 years old. He too had no previous children.1,13 In 1971 they lived at 25 Anson Rd, Bilton Grange, Hull, Yorkshire,1,16 and then at 88 Bayswater Court, Bellfield Avenue, Hull, Yorkshire; a top flat, 16th floor. Noted as Mrs B only16 and later at 105 Tilsworth Road, Ings Road, Hull, (1993)17,1 and at 90 Biggin Avenue, Branscombe Estate, Hull, Humberside, (1994.)18

Bessie died in 2005 aged 87 years.5

On 15 April 1933 Bessie Hodgson was photographed with Joseph Hodgson and Doris Hodgson on their wedding day. George Hodgson, Edna Loft, Arthur Loft and Mary Hodgson also appeared in the photo.19

On 13 January 1935 Bessie was photographed posed standing.20

On circa 1941 Bessie was photographed in an unidentified uniform.21,22,11

Arthur L Hodgson was born circa July 1909.1,4 He married Alice Mabel Petman, daughter of Mr (?) Petman, circa November 1925 at Goole, Yorkshire.1,3 From about 1929 to 1934Arthur L was Restaurant Owner with his own premises at 32 Ouse Road, Goole.5,6,7 He lived at Cottingham Street in 1934.8

At some point, Arthur and his brothers Stanley and Percy moved to Goole to work in the docks there.9

On 4 September 1935 Arthur L Hodgson was photographed with Paddy Mooney and Miriam Hodgson on their wedding day. Doris Hodgson, Joseph Hodgson, Hannah Hodgson, Alice Mabel Hodgson, Grace Bowman, Stanley Hodgson, Mona Binnington, Geoff Hodgson, Miriam Hodgson, Rita Hodgson, Norman Osborne Hodgson, Colin Stanley Hodgson and Mr (?) Petman also appeared in the photo. There are other people in the photo as well.10,9,11,12,13 Later, Percy and Arthur had keels probably belonging to their father, George. Percy apparently had the Reliant, which was part-owned by Timms the Millers; Percy was paid 'thirds'. Arthur had the Radiant.14,15 At times they would tow the barges along the canal by hauling them along from the path using a rope. The method of towing was called 'bow-yanking' and led to strong leg muscles. His son remembered that Arthur was able to step up onto a table and stand upright in one easy movement.16 It seems that he obtained two of his father's barges which he probably operated with Percy and two of his sons.1

Between 1971 and 23 December 1993Arthur L lived at 96 Percy Street, Goole.17,18,19

On 21 June 1986 Arthur's sister, Miriam, wrote to him and his wife about making a visit. The letter read:

Dear Arthur and Mabel,

I have been having a chat with Bessie, over the phone, and we would like to meet up in Goole, if you can manage to sleep us for a night or two. I will travel tho' to Goole and from there to Hull for Bessie.

We have a longing to see you as Bessie had a phone call from Arthur Loft's wife about no-one going to see you, so we are making the effort. I don't phone because Bessie says you find it an effort to get to the phone (you get breathless). Just a card will do if it's OK.

Love to you both

Miri

I will look after myself, don't go to any trouble.20

Arthur L died in 1993.21,22,11 He was probably living at 19 Percy Street, Goole, at the time.1

About 1914 Arthur was photographed with Doris Hodgson, Arthur Loft, Stanley Hodgson, Miriam Osbourne and Edward Shaw Loft outside 6 Sunnybank which has a bay window.23,24

Circa 1974 Arthur L Hodgson was photographed with Geoff Hodgson. Alice Mabel Hodgson, Madonna Hodgson, Norman Osborne Hodgson, Doreen Hodgson, Colin Stanley Hodgson, Joan Phillips, Harry Phillips and Mary Hodgson also appeared in the photo.25

Percy Osbourne Hodgson was born circa October 1902.1,5

He joined the Black and Tans with his mate Bill Richardson after his mother died when the call went out for volunteers to serve in Ireland. He became an officer's batman but he did not like the attitudes and ways of his fellow Black and Tans and his father bought him out. It was said of him He was only a boy valeting for an officer.6,7

Percy Osbourne Hodgson married Grace Bowman circa May 1922 at Sculcoates.1,8,9

Percy Osbourne Hodgson was a witness at the marriage of Louisa Bowman and Thomas William Richardson on 15 November 1924 at St Andrew's Church, Kingston-upon-Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire; The witnesses were Charlotte Bowman and Percy Osborne Hodgson.10,11

At some point, Percy and his brothers Stanley and Arthur moved to Goole to work in the docks there.12 Later, Percy and Arthur had keels probably belonging to their father, George. Percy apparently had the Reliant, which was part-owned by Timms the Millers; Percy was paid 'thirds'. Arthur had the Radiant.13,7 Percy lost the Reliant in 1945 when it sank in the Humber whilst it was being towed with a number of other keels. It got caught by the current and began to sink. At the last minute he jumped to safety on another keel after rescuing a dog. Afterwards he became his father's mate on the Whim getting a half share.7

He was in the ARP during WW2.7 He was also a prisoner-of-war during WW2 and was sent to Germany after Italy capitulated.7

Percy could hardly read and write but had a very good brain and was always doing something, listening to the radio, painting - he painted everything including furniture and boats.

Miriam Wilson said that he knew every turn and could operate the barges. He could even use the engines after, they were fitted his barge, without the benefit of training.7

Percy Osbourne Hodgson and Grace Bowman lived at 4 Eskwood Walk, Fairfield Estate, Goole, Yorkshire, between 1975 and 2 March 19831,14 and carried on living there after his wife died in 1983.1,14 Percy Osbourne Hodgson died on 31 October 1994.2

Stanley Hodgson was born in 1909.5,6

As a young man he didn't live at home because there wasn't enough room for everybody. Instead, he stayed on a barge belonging to his father. His sister Miriam used to visit him sometimes. On these occasions, he would buy a fresh loaf of bread from a nearby shop and they would have a picnic together on the barge.4,7 At some point, Stanley and his brothers Percy and Arthur moved to Goole to work in the docks there.8

Stanley Hodgson was a witness at the marriage of Paddy Mooney and Miriam Hodgson on 4 September 1935 at Register Office, Sculcoates, Hull, Yorkshire.7,9,10,8,11,12,13

On 4 September 1935 Stanley Hodgson was photographed with Paddy Mooney and Miriam Hodgson on their wedding day. Doris Hodgson, Joseph Hodgson, Hannah Hodgson, Arthur L Hodgson, Alice Mabel Hodgson, Grace Bowman, Mona Binnington, Geoff Hodgson, Miriam Hodgson, Rita Hodgson, Norman Osborne Hodgson, Colin Stanley Hodgson and Mr (?) Percy apparently had the Reliant, which was part-owned by Timms the Millers; Percy was paid 'thirds'. Arthur had the Radiant.18,19

Stanley Hodgson married Hetty Mahilda Wilson circa June 1943 in Goole.2,20,21,22 It was said that his father wanted him to marry his half sister, Olga, but that she wasn't interested.23 They moved into Miriam and Paddy Mooney's house at 141 Pasture Road, Goole, in 1944 soon after they were married. Miriam left many things for them of which only a clock now survives. In 2008 the clock was owned by Susan Carter, Hetty's daughter.24,25,26 A few years later Stanley and Hetty were living in Edinburgh Street, Goole.26

Stanley hurt himself whilst working on the Whim with his father. He had an accident carrying a sack of wheat and found he had a swollen testicle. He ended-up in the Leeds Infirmary where Hetty used to visit him. He eventually came home and was told he had cancer. He was also told he had only a month to live but he didn't tell Hetty. He had always been a nice man, 'a funny old stick' according to Hetty, but he changed towards her as the weeks went by and he started to say bad things to her. She only found out about him knowing he was dying from one of his brothers later.26 Stanley Hodgson died on 6 October 1947 at the age of 37 leaving a young wife and two small sons2,27,28,29,19,25 He was buried at Goole Cemetery. The inscription on his headstone says: Treasured Memories of STANLEY HODGSON beloved husband of HETTY father of RAYMOND & STANLEY dear son of GEORGE & MIRIAM HODGSON died OCT 6th 1947, aged 37 years, UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN.

Stanley's niece Marlene Anderson recalled in 2003 Grandad bought the grave. Hetty at some point gave her sister permission to bury her husband in it. My Mum and Dad expected to go in the same grave but the stonework had all been broken-up to be used for the sister's husband.10,28,30
